2001-09-16 section meeting: minutes

Minutes of the IAHR/IWA Hydroinformatics Committee meeting, Beijing, PR China, September 16, 2001.

Unfortunately, due to the September 11 event, not all Committee Members could attend the meeting.

  1. Minutes of Section Meeting held in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, USA, July 26, 2000 Minutes were approved; a joint IAHR/IWA Hydroinformatics Committee has thus become effective: IAHR contact Babovic, IWA contact Falconer, Mynett to chair Joint Committee.
  2. Broadening the joint IAHR/IWA Hydroinformatics Committee Following the suggestion by Falconer (IAHR Council) in his letter of 19 march 2001, it was agreed to broaden the joint Hydroinformatics Committee by inviting IAHS to participate. Hubert (IAHS Secretary General) already indicated IAHS would be delighted to join.
  3. Report on the NATO Advanced Research Workshop, Idaho, USA, April 2001 A successful workshop on  New Paradigms in River and Estuarine Management  was held; contributions and video tapes of presentations available via internet. Combined ecohydraulics and hydroinformatics perspectives provide a good perspective for cooperation (Holly).
  4. Assessment of the XXIX IAHR Beijing Conference Section members present were somewhat disappointed to see that scope and themes of the Beijing Conference turned out rather traditional, despite efforts put forward by the Section (and Council) since Graz to focus on future issues. (It was good to see that, during the conference, the importance of Hydroinformatics was emphasised on a number of occasions, e.g. by the Global Water Partnership at the opening session).
  5. EWRI (ASCE) / IAHR Oversight Committee The informal gathering planned during Beijing was cancelled due to Sep 11 events.
  6. Preparations for the 5th Hydroinformatics Conference, Cardiff, UK, July 2002 A status update was provided by Roger Falconer   new flyers and leaflets were distributed.
  7. Outline to the XXX IAHR Congress in Thessaloniki, Greece Jacques Ganoulis outlined the preliminary scope of Thessaloniki; the Committee members favoured an explicit Hydroinformatics Theme (after communication with Council this was accomodated by the LOC   the present programme involves THEME D: Hydroinformatics and Advanced Data Technology in Engineering Practice).
  8. Options for 6th (Asia 2004) and 7th (Europe 2006) Hydroinformatics Conferences After consultation with Liong and Lee it was decided to hold HIC 2004 in Singapore (June) and a Specialty Workshop on Environmental Hydroinformatics in Hong Kong (December 2004) during the Asian Division Meeting. Perhaps Nice would be an option for HIC 2006?
  9. Journal of Hydroinformatics / Journal of Hydraulic Research The status of JHI and JHR were also presented at the closing session; contributions welcome.
  10. Any other business It is suggested to include simulation of wastewater treatment processes in Hydroinformatics.
