Minutes of meeting

1. Minutes of last Section meeting held in Graz, Austria (August 1999)

   Minutes of the section meeting held in Graz, Austria during the XXVIII IAHR Congress were distributed at the meeting. From now on, minutes of meeting and other communications will be available on the Internet, at the section's web site http://www.iahr.org as well as mirrored on http://d2k.dk/General/HI.htm

2. Joint IAHR-IWA Committee

   The working group consisting of Tony Minns, Roger Falconer and Peter Holz had already prepared the joint IAHR-IWA Committee bylaws for the Graz meeting. A copy of the draft text was also distributed at the meeting. It was decided that the text in its present form should be made available on the section's web site and kept open for discussion and possible amendments. Professor Falconer has been asked to present the Bylaws to IAHR's council for final approval at their meeting following the Hydroinformatics 2000 conference.

3. Hydroinformatics NATO ARW Application by Tony Minns and Peter Goodwin to NATO to organise Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) has been approved and received funding. The workshop title is "New Paradigms in River and Estuarine Management" and is planned for March/April 2001. The duration of the workshop will be three days and participation is limited to 50 delegates. The general idea of the workshop is to provide a platform for the exchange of ideas and experiences between researches and practitioners on the one hand and establish closer ties between hydroinformatics and eco-hydraulics communities on the other. 4. IAHR Congress in Beijing, September 16-21, 2001

   The next IAHR Congress will be held in PR China under the motto "21st Century: The New Era for Hydraulic Research and Its Applications". The Congress web site is http://www.2001iahr.iwhr.com The technical sessions will cover the methods, tools, experience and results of hydraulic research and engineering, focusing on the following five themes:

   • A. Development, Planning and Management of Surface and Groundwater Resources

   It is obvious from the Congress programme that hydroinformatics has received a prominent place. It is now of vital importance that the Hydroinformatics Section help the Local Organising Committee with the solicitation of high quality hydroinformatics papers. In order to assure good support by the section, it has been decided to ask a number of individuals to actively contribute and coordinate paper submission. The deadline for full paper submission is November 30, 2000.

   The persons responsible for the five theses are:

   • E. Arthur Mynett

   In addition to the regular conference programme, Michael Abbott is also involved in the organisation of a Seminar on hydroinformatics and social issues.

5. 5th Hydroinformatics Conference, Cardiff/Bristol, UK

   As was decided at the previous section meeting, the 5th International Conference on Hydroinformatics will be organised by Cardiff University, July 1- July 5, 2002. The conference will be co-organised by the University of Bristol. The First Announcement and Call for Papers has already been printed and was distributed at Hydroinformatics 2000 Conference. The chairman of the Organising Committee is Roger Falconer and the co-chair is Ian Cluckie

6. 6th and 7th Hydroinformatics Conference

   Following the pattern according to which the Hydroinformatics conference returns to Europe for its 5th occurrence, it has been recommended that the preferred location for the 6th International Conference on Hydroinformatics is Asia, whereas the preferred location for the 7th Conference is again Europe.

   Bids for hosting the 6th or 7th conference should be submitted to the Hydroinformatics Section chairman, Arthur Mynett. The final decision as to where the 6th Hydroinformatics conference will be held will be taken in Beijing, during the forthcoming IAHR Congress.

7. Journal of Hydroinformatics and other publications

   A brief report on the status of the Journal of Hydroinformatics was given by one of the Journal Editors, Michael Abbott. The first meeting of the Journal's Editorial board was been held during the Hydroinformatics 2000 Conference. The first five issues of the Journal have been well received. There is a steady inflow of papers.

   In light of the establishment of the joint IAHR/IWA section on hydroinformatics it has been suggested that section chairman, Arthur Mynett writes an overview paper on hydroinformatics in IWA's Water 21.

   A special issue of the Journal of Hydraulic Research on Hydroinformatics is scheduled for 2001. A section committee will decide on the exact procedure for handling the papers. This procedure will be announced on the section's web page.

8. WWW-based communications and discussion

   All of the section-related material (minutes of meeting, by-laws, etc.) will be kept on the section s Internet site at http://www.iahr.org

9. Any other business

   Hydroinformatics conference proceedings: Proceedings of the Hydroinformatics 2000 conference appeared on a CD-ROM with the accompanying book of abstracts. Several delegates have expressed a preference that the proceedings are issued in a book form, accompanied with a CD-ROM containing electronic versions of papers.

   Also, it was suggested that standard Speaker introduction sheets, as well as instructions for Section moderators, be prepared for the 5th Hydroinformatics conference.

   Finally, it was suggested that an open floor session be held at the end of the day, after the technical sessions, to summarise the main topics and conclusions, provided that the conference programme allows for such sessions.

   The next Section meeting will be held in Beijing, in September 2001, during the forthcoming XXIX IAHR Congress.
